16 Apr 2021

Public Security Minister Admiral Sarath Weerasekara said that special action would be taken to investigate fake news uploaded on social networking sites. He was responding to the media after attending an event held in Mulleriyawa area yesterday (15). "There is no idea of making a law that would disable the freedom of expression of the public. It has been decided to make only a few changes in the contents of the existing Penal Code and to incorporate new matters," he said. Speaking further, he said, "Freedom of expression is seen as one of the fundamental rights of the Constitution. Freedom of expression is liberalized in democracies. The same is seen in Sri Lanka. A party abuses the freedom of expression granted for a good purpose." He stated that those who abuse freedom of expression will be monitored. "Fake news has been uploaded on social media in the past, claiming that the government is taking anti-environmental measures. The allegations made so far have not been proven to be true and the government has taken appropriate measures to protect the environment," he said.
