The Sri Lanka Navy is taking steps to counter all maritime threats including illegal migration from various countries.
Navy Spokesperson Lt. Cmdr. Isuru Sooriyabandara told The Morning that the Navy was paying special attention to all aspects of maritime security.
"We have done the utmost to ramp up our maritime security, as smugglers, whether it is human trafficking or illegal drugs, could approach this pandemic situation to their advantage," he said.
The Navy Spokesperson said that naval forces had been deployed in the seas surrounding the country, particularly in the north and north western waters.
"In the north and north western waters we see bigger clusters of fishermen and smugglers use such fishing clusters as a cover for their illegal operations. We are on the lookout for illegal immigrants from all neighbouring countries," he said.
