  • DWC to capture and release to suitable location
BY Buddhika Samaraweera The Wildlife Conservation Department (DWC) has deployed a special team to capture the crocodile that is roaming in the seas off the Dehiwala area and to release it to a suitable location, according to DWC Director General Chandana Sooriyabandara. A diver that was swimming in the seas off Dehiwala died on 3 December following an attack by the said crocodile. Accordingly, when inquired as to whether the DWC has taken any action to capture the crocodile, Sooriyabandara told The Morning on 4 January that a team of officers has been deployed to capture and release it to a suitable location. He said that the said team of officers has been given the necessary instructions. “Crocodiles usually migrate to the seas across rivers, but this is the first time such an incident has been reported in the seas around Colombo. Most of these incidents have been reported in the seas off the Eastern Province before. It is however unfortunate that a person has died as a result of this crocodile attack,” he added. The deceased had been identified as a 57-year-old male. The Police stated that the incident had taken place when the crocodile attempted to draw away the person who was swimming in the sea.
