Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekera said today that a separate panel, a committee and a team comprising of Navy and Air Force personnel have been set up to look into the incidents of deforestation.
The Minister was responding to a question raised by a journalist at a ceremony held in the Kolonnawa.
The Minister said that those who have been destroying the environment in the past are now showing that cutting down trees on private lands is a great environmental disaster.
"There is no one who loves the environment as much as the President. During his tenure as the Secretary of Defense, he worked to plant trees, build tanks and culverts and to beautify and clean up the environment. We must keep in mind that destroying the environment is a betrayal of the country," he stated.
He said that the President had instructed the Special Task Force (STF) to arrest the persons and all those involved in the destruction of the environment and to punish them severely.
