BY Buddhika Samaraweera Under the plan to transport agricultural produce such as fruits and vegetables by train, specially designed compartments are currently being set up for the transportation of fruits and vegetables, according to the Department of Railways. Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage recently stated that it had been planned to transport agricultural products such as fruits and vegetables by train. Accordingly, when contacted by The Morning to inquire about the progress of the said programme, Department of Railways General Manager Dhammika Jayasundara said that the programme is initially planned to be implemented using specially designed compartments for the transportation of fruits and vegetables. He said that discussions are underway to connect such compartments to normal passenger trains and to transport fruits and vegetables from Nanu Oya to Colombo in the initial stage. He added that if the programme is successful in the initial stages, it will be extended to other areas as well. However, when queried as to whether a timeframe could be set for the implementation of this programme, Jayasundara said: “Currently, the Agriculture Ministry, the Transport Ministry, and the Railways Department are discussing this and no final decision has been reached yet.”
