‘Sports Minister’s story a fabrication’

  • NOC President denies meeting Roshan Ranasinghe
  • Claims Minister ‘trying to impress public to earn mileage’
By Marlon Dale Ferreira  National Olympic Committee (NOC) President Suresh Subramaniam vehemently denied all accusations made by Minister of Sports Roshan Ranasinghe at a recent television talk show and alleged that the latter had simply lied to viewers to impress the public and earn mileage. Sports Minister Ranasinghe was grilled during the talk show over the matter of seven athletes selected to take part in the World Athletics Under 20 Championship from 1 to 6 August 2022 at the Estadio Olímpico Pascual Guerrero in Cali, Colombia being forced to delay their departure due to local officials bungling their visas and tickets. In an act of protest, the parents of the seven selected athletes slept on the steps of the Ministry of Sports overnight, seeking the officials of the Ministry to make it possible for their children to make the trip, represent the country, and achieve their cherished dreams. Subramaniam, who is currently at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham in an official capacity and also to hand out medals to the winners yesterday (7), speaking to The Morning Sports said: “The Minister never met me, nor spoke to me. It’s a fabricated story. I am disappointed that Minister Ranasinghe had stated that I had spoken to him. I categorically deny meeting him or speaking to him or anyone else. He was supposed to attend the Sports Minister’s meeting and he didn’t. I believe he decided to attend Parliament that day due to the vote that was taken in Parliament. Looks like the Minister was simply trying to impress the public to earn mileage.”
