FIDE World Youth Chess - Oshini enters semis

Oshini Devindya Gunawardena of Pushpadana College advanced to the semi-finals of the U-10 girls’ category at FIDE Online World Youth Chess Cup 2021.

Gunawardena had to play two games with Russia’s Ksenia Asachenko with a rating of 1,317. She won both of them in style to enter the semis where she will meet another Russian, Diana Preobrazhenskaya today (29).

Earlier, Sri Lanka national champion Ranindu Liyanage lost a hard-fought match against Nikoloas Spyropoulos, a strong FIDE Master with a rating of 2,425, from Greece.

SLC to introduce new domestic structure

The membership of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has unanimously ratified at an Extraordinary General Meeting yesterday (28) the new domestic tournament structure, which had been designed by its Tournament Committee in consultation with the Technical Advisory Committee under Aravinda de Silva.

The membership has also ratified unanimously the adoption of the audited financial statement of accounts of SLC for the financial year ending 2020, which had been certified by the Auditor General, a media release by SLC said.

England thrash India to level series

England beat India by an innings and 76 runs at Headingley, Leeds on the fourth day morning of their third Test yesterday (18). The series is now level at 1-1 after three matches.

The fourth Test of the five-match series will be from Thursday, September at The Oval, London.

Scores:

India 78 and 278 all out in 99.3 ovs (Cheteshwar Pujara 91, Rohit Sharma 59, Virat Kohli 55; Ollie Robinson 5/65)

England 432 (Joe Root 121, Dawid Malan 70; Mohammed Shami 4/95)

Priyamal Jayakody, 34, of Sri Lanka Army, who had been injured in 2009 during north-east war, finishes fifth with a time of 11:21.31 seconds, out of five participants in ‘PR1’ men’s single sculls rowing repechage-2, only to enter Final-B of the event. He thus failed to reach Final-A of the medal final.

Ireland came up short against Zimbabwe by three runs, chasing 118 to win, in the first T20I of a five-match series on Friday (27) but they will be looking for an improved performance in the second game today (29) at the Clontarf Cricket Club grounds in Dublin, Ireland at 4.30 p.m. Sri Lanka time.
