Spread of Covid-19 : Dr. Samaraweera says there's no community transmission

  • PHIs allege virus reached community transmission
  • Health authorities say spread still from two clusters
By Maheesha Mudugamuwa The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health vehemently denied the claim that there was social transmission of Covid-19 within the country. Responding to the allegations levelled by the Public Health Inspectors’ Union of Sri Lanka (PHIU) that some areas have almost reached the community transmission level as there were patients reported without a proper source, Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera told The Morning that health authorities have repeatedly stated that there was no such social transmission in Sri Lanka. He reiterated that the cases reported so far were from the two large clusters that erupted recently in Peliyagoda and Minuwangoda or from their extended subclusters. Urging the public to take necessary precautions, Dr. Samaraweera said the public has a huge responsibility to contain the virus. “We strictly advise the public to restrict movement and stay at home,” he added.
