By Easwaran Rutnam Sri Lanka is awaiting a response from the Singaporean Government to a request for the extradition of former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran. An official at the Sri Lankan High Commission in Singapore confirmed to The Sunday Morning that the extradition request has been forwarded to the Singaporean Foreign Ministry. Sri Lanka is now awaiting a formal response from Singapore to the extradition request. The extradition request for former Central Bank Governor Mahendran was sent by the Foreign Ministry to the Sri Lankan High Commission in Singapore last week. President Maithripala Sirisena signed the documents seeking the extradition of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) from Singapore. The Singaporean Foreign Ministry had said earlier this month that it will consider the extradition request for Arjuna Mahendran, who is a Singaporean national of Sri Lankan origin, once the necessary supporting information and documents are received. It said the information and documents had been requested since 18 January this year, and the Sri Lankan High Commission had also confirmed that these documents had not yet been conveyed to the Singaporean Government. In June this year, the Attorney General filed indictments against Arjuna Mahendran and nine others before the Permanent High Court-at-Bar over the Central Bank Treasury Bond Scam. Later in August, the Permanent High Court-at-Bar summoned the accused to appear before the court on 19 July. The Permanent High Court issued a warrant for the arrest of former CBSL Governor Arjuna Mahendran over the Central Bank Bond Scam.
