[caption id="attachment_112147" align="aligncenter" width="2814"] Vishwa Fernando pumped up, took five for 101 yesterday (4), his first five-for in Tests[/caption]
  • Take slender five-run lead with six wickets in hand

Dean Elgar’s ton (127) guided hosts South Africa to a first-innings' lead of 145 runs despite a maiden five-wicket haul for Vishwa Fernando. That was before Sri Lanka Captain Dimuth Karunaratne fought to an unbeaten 91 for his team to have a lead of five runs by stumps on day two of the second and final cricket Test at Johannesburg yesterday (4). Sri Lanka lost the first Test at Centurion by an innings and 45 runs. Elgar and Rassie van der Dussen added 118 together on the first-day evening and they resumed the partnership with confidence yesterday. It wasn’t until the 15th over of the morning session that Sri Lanka finally got a wicket, by which point the stand was worth 184 – the highest second-wicket partnership in Tests between the two sides.   First five-for for Vishwa   A wicket before lunch brought a collapse and after Elgar edged Dushmantha Chameera to slip in the first over after drinks, van der Dussen followed an over later, caught off the glove from the bowling of Dasun Shanaka. Fernando completed his maiden Test five-for when he had Lutho Sipamla caught at gully off the back foot, leaving South Africa all out for 302. The left-arm seamer finished with figures of 5/101. Sri Lanka’s second innings got off to a disastrous start when Kusal Perera, who top-scored in their first innings, was bowled by Lungi Ngidi with just one run on the board. But Karunaratne provided a Captain’s knock, battling through against testing bowling as Lahiru Thirimanne, who made a fighting 31, Kusal Mendis, and Minod Bhanuka got out before settling themselves in.   SCORECARD   Sri Lanka 1st innings 157   South Africa 1st innings (overnight 148/1)   Dean Elgar c Thirimanne b Chameera 127 Aiden Markram c Mendis b Fernando 5 Rassie van der Dussen c Dickwella b Shanaka 67 Faf du Plessis c Dickwella b Shanaka 8 Quinton de Kock c Mendis b Fernando 10 Temba Bavuma lbw b Fernando 19 Wiaan Mulder lbw b Fernando 7 Keshav Maharaj c Dickwella b Fernando 2 Anrich Nortje c Mendis b Fernando 13 Lutho Sipamla c Shanaka b Fernando 5 Lungi Ngidi not out 14   Extras (w 3, b 8, lb 14) 25                                        Total (all out in 75.4 overs) 302  Fall of wickets: 1-34 (Markram, 7.3 ov), 2-218 (Elgar, 51.2 ov), 3-218 (van der Dussen, 52.3 ov), 4-235 (du Plessis, 56.6 ov), 5-241 (de Kock, 57.6 ov), 6-257 (Mulder, 63.2 ov), 7-262 (Maharaj, 64.6 ov), 8-276 (Bavuma, 67.6 ov), 9-283 (Nortje, 69.3 ov), 10-302 (Sipamla, 75.4 ov)   Bowling: Vishwa Fernando 23.4-0-101-5 (w1), Asitha Fernando 19-5-61-2 (w1), Dushmantha Chameera 14-1-53-1, Dasun Shanaka 15-3-42-2 (w1), Wanindu Hasaranga 4-0-23-0   Sri Lanka 2nd innings   Dimuth Karunaratne not out 91 Kusal Perera b Ngidi 1 Lahiru Thirimanne c de Kock b Ngidi 31 Kusal Mendis c de Kock b Ngidi 0 Minod Bhanuka c Maharaj b Nortje 1 Niroshan Dickwella not out 18   Extras (nb 1, w 1, b 4, lb 2) 8   Total (for 4 wickets in 39 overs) 150                                   Did not bat: Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Vishwa Fernando, Dushmantha Chameera, Asitha Fernando   Fall of wickets: 1-1 (Perera, 2.2 ov), 2-86 (Thirimanne, 22.6 ov), 3-92 (Mendis, 24.1 ov), 4-109 (Bhanuka, 27.3 ov)   Bowling: Lungi Ngidi 9-3-26-3, Anrich Nortje 11-1-41-1 (w1), Wiaan Mulder 11-2-43-0 (nb1), Lutho Sipamla 8-1-34-0
