Sri Lanka win men's team title at Carrom World Cup

Sri Lanka men’s team has become champions in this year’s carrom World Cup now being held in South Korea, the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) said on Monday, August 27. The event is taking place from 23 to 26 August in the city of Chuncheon. They have beaten fancied India 2/1 in the finals. France and Maldives has become third and fourth in the men’s team event of the World Cup respectively. Meanwhile Sri Lanka women’s team has been the runner-up to India in their segment, the women’s team event. Maldives is the third and Japan has been placed fourth. India were the defending world champions which won the title in 2014. In the men's carrom final, Sri Lanka defeated defending world champions India by 2-1 in the men's team event to secure their maiden Carrom World Cup title. India thrashed Sri Lanka 3-0 in the women's team tournament final to defend the title. Indian carrom player Kajal Kumari became the first ever woman to clinch the overall combined Swiss League title after defeating defending Swiss League champion Chamil Cooray of Sri Lanka in the final. The Swiss League is played by players of both genders. Individual events – In the individual division, two pairs representing Sri Lanka had reached the semi-finals in Men’s Doubles. The pairs are: Chamil Cooray, Sri Lanka men’s skipper, and Nishantha Fernando, and Mohammed Hilmy and Udesh Chaminda. The Sri Lankan contingent, comprising eight players, went to Korea for this 5th edition of the Carrom World Cup on 21 August. Sri Lanka’s women’s team comprises Yashika Rahubadda (Captain), Joseph Roshita, Chalani L. Liyanage and Maduka D. Liyanage. The team officials include the President of the CFSL who is also the chef-de-mission, Parakrama Basnayake, Vice President of CFSL and Team Manager Brindly Wickramasinghe and Ms. Amitha Wickramasinghe, a Referee. Twenty-one countries including Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Japan Maldives, Pakistan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, UK and USA are participating in this year’s Carrom World Cup. * The photo shows the jubilant Sri Lanka carrom team at the World Cup in Korea.
