After a mammoth first-innings total of 621, including 199 for Faf du Plessis, the Proteas looked set for victory at the start of day-four yesterday and an emphatic bowling performance saw them bowl the tourists out for 180 in their second innings. The loss for the Lankans was mainly caused by the injuries to their main strike bowlers, Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara. Their main middle-order bat Dhananjaya de Silva retired injured in the first innings when he was unbeaten 79 at the crease and was declared out of the series. Debutante Wanindu Hasaranga was a key plus point for the Lankans as he got four wickets for 171 with his leg breaks before scoring 59 runs in 53 deliveries yesterday hammering 12 fours and a six too. Starting the day on 65/2 on Tuesday, Sri Lanka were searching for another 160 runs to make the hosts bat again but all four of the main Protea bowlers shared two wickets apiece to ouster the Lankans with 45 runs more to cover the deficit. De Silva didn’t come to bat and was declared as ‘absent hurt’. It was on their last visit to South Africa, in 2019, that the Lankans won their record first-ever Test series win there, by 2-0, after grabbing victory from the jaws of defeat in the now-famous Durban Test. They won it by a mere one wicket on the back of a brilliant 153 not out by Kusal Perera. Perera that time shared the highest successful tenth-wicket partnership of 78 runs with Vishwa Fernando.
