Sri Lanka to launch major tourism promotion drive

26 May 2019

By Skandha Gunasekara Sri Lanka Tourism will be sending delegations to over 50 travel expositions and events around the world and key countries to promote Sri Lanka tourism and assure the safety of travelling to Sri Lanka. The tourism industry took a major hit following the Easter Sunday attacks and steps are now being taken to attract tourists back to Sri Lanka. Head of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau Kishu Gomes told The Sunday Morning that groups from Sri Lanka Tourism, headed by him, would be going to countries from where over 100,000 tourists visited Sri Lanka. “We will be targeting specific countries of focused markets because there is no point going all over the place. This is to ensure we bounce back fast. So we will be visiting markets such as the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, Australia, and of course India as well,” he said, adding that a board decision had been taken that Gomes would be heading these missions. It will be for Sri Lanka Tourism to go to these countries to carry out communications and public relations campaigns to address the travel agents, media, and other tourism stakeholders. “We want to speak with all these countries and stakeholders, to update them on the current situation in Sri Lanka, and to say that security has been restored and life is back to normal,” he said. He said the initiative would begin from the second week of June. Furthermore, Gomes said that Sri Lanka Tourism will be taking part in 55 global travel and trade events. These will include 37 travel and trade fairs, 18 road shows, and nine consumer engagements.
