Sri Lanka welcomes young tennis champs from regional neighbours

22 Feb 2022

Junior Davis Cup and Junior Billie Jean King Cup, previously known as Junior Fed Cup, which is the virtual Under-16 (U-16) Tennis World Cup for boys and girls tennis since 1985, began on Monday (21) at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) in Colombo. The tournament is conducted by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). It was only in the last weekend that the SLTA completed holding a successful ITF World Junior U-14 Asia-Oceania Zone regional pre-qualifying event, with the participation of 13 countries in boys and nine for girls – a total of 22 teams. In that, the Sri Lanka girls’ team could also qualify for the Asia-Oceania Final Qualifiers, to be held in Thailand later in the year. “The confidence the ITF is having in Sri Lanka as a host country, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, is amply reflected in the fact that we have been able to host two back-to-back ITF tournaments with the participation of over 45 teams,” said a happy SLTA President Iqbal Bin Issack at the opening of the Junior Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup on Monday. Junior Davis and Fed Cups will go on at SLTA till Saturday (26). Two countries each, out of a total of 16 in both boys and girls, will qualify for the next round. Sri Lanka is neither taking part in the Junior Davis Cup nor the Billie Jean King Cup as they have already qualified for the Final Qualifiers of the region according to their tournament results last year. Last year, Russia and the Czech Republic won the Junior Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup, respectively, beating France and Japan in the finals held in Antalya, Turkey. Understanding the significance of the occasion, The Morning Sports decided to introduce today all the countries that are taking part in the Junior Davis Cup and the Junior Billie Jean Cup in Colombo, internationally sponsored by BNP Paribas and organised by the ITF in amalgamation with the SLTA.
