Sri Lanka's health mechanism to curb COVID has been compromised: JVP

11 May 2021

Leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Anura Kumara Dissanayake today stated that the health mechanisms utilized to curb the spread of the COVID pandemic has been severely compromised. He said that in several districts, there are more than 100 homeless people who cannot be transported to hospitals. "Many of us are talking about this and letting the authorities know that they can’t find a bed. The government hospital system and the intermediate hospital system are out of beds. As a result, patients are left helpless and unable to do anything at home," he said. He also stated that due to the tactless handling of the spread of the virus, the health authorities have become tired. "On the other hand, there is a lack of even basic facilities when health workers are trying to fulfill their responsibilities to the fullest. Protests are even being held in some hospitals in a background where PPE and other infrastructure have not been developed. Public Health Inspectors play a vital role in controlling this disease. This means that the health staff is very tired," he commented. Dissanayake accused that this situation has arisen because of the neglectful decisions of the President, government and other areas of administration. He accused the President of acting proudly and immaturely in the face of the pandemic. "He has developed an arbitrary, deceitful approach that does not listen to anyone. Due to this, the health sector and expert groups that are taking remedial action are not going to hold open discussions with the President. The facts are not presented openly. This arbitrary behavior of the President is taking the lives of human beings in our country today," he said.
