Sri Pada pilgrimage revival brings plastic waste problem

27 Jan 2022

By Pamodi Waravita The Maskeliya Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) said yesterday (26) that with the revival of the Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak) pilgrimage season following two years of the Covid-19 pandemic, about 500 kilos of plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles and other non-degradable waste are collected from around Sri Pada every day. The Sri Pada pilgrimage season began on 18 December 2021, and is due to end on 22 May 2022. “About one tonne of degradable and 500 kilogrammes (kg) of non-degradable waste, mainly PET bottles, are collected from around Sri Pada every day. We have 17 workers at the PS who collect the waste from the 15 trash disposal points we have set up from the top to the bottom of the hill,” a Maskeliya PS official told The Morning yesterday. However, she added that environmental harm due to irresponsible trash disposal is minimal as the waste is duly collected by the Maskeliya PS. For this year’s pilgrimage season, an extraordinary gazette was published by the Ratnapura District Secretariat, mandating masks, proof of Covid-19 vaccination, social distancing, and other health guidelines for devotees who make the pilgrimage.
