State Minister Dr. Sudarshini writes to President: Requests 14 day islandwide lockdown

23 May 2021

  • Echoes clarion call of medical associations

  • Local academics/scientists of int’l repute express concern

By Yoshitha Perera   State Minister of Primary Healthcare, Epidemics, and Covid-19 Disease Control Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle has written to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa requesting 14 days of islandwide lockdown, The Sunday Morning learnt. Speaking to The Sunday Morning, Ministry of Health Secretary Major General Dr. S. Munasinghe said that there is a special meeting to decide on 14 days of lockdown. “Nothing can be said on the 14 days of complete lockdown as of now. I can only say that at present there is only what has been declared earlier.” Attempts to contact State Minister Dr. Fernandopulle in this regard, proved futile. Meanwhile, two academics and scientists, University of Hong Kong Faculty of Medicine Department of Microbiology Chair Professor Malik Peiris and former World Health Organisation (WHO) malaria expert Prof. Kamini Mendis made a research assessment regarding the current Covid-19 spread in Sri Lanka. According to the research paper, the duo highlighted the facts on why small-area isolation, preventing inter-provincial travel, short and intermittent lockdowns, and mild restraints on human movement would not work in the prevailing situation. It is clearly mentioned that testing is not sufficient to make small-area isolation have an impact and that there would only be a minor impact from inter-provincial travel restrictions, since there is already a high level of the transmission of the virus in all the provinces. Elsewhere, four main medical associations also urged the Government to impose 14 days of complete lockdown or the imposition of curfew at a stretch. Releasing a joint statement on 21 May, the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) along with the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA), the Association of Medical Specialists (AMS), and the SLMA Intercollegiate Committee (SMIC) urged the Government to consider the abovementioned request.
