State of Emergency: Lapses without Parliament approval

22 May 2022

The State of Emergency that was declared by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on 6 May 2022 has lapsed due to the failure to receive parliamentary approval, it is learnt. Chief Opposition Whip MP Lakshman Kiriella confirmed to The Sunday Morning that the Emergency regulations had lapsed due to the failure of the Government to present it to Parliament last week for approval. “We thought the Emergency regulations would be presented to Parliament for approval last week. It was not done; therefore they have lapsed,” he explained. Kiriella added that according to the law, the Emergency regulations had to be presented to Parliament within 10 days of the gazette being issued and that the stipulated time had now lapsed.  – MIA
