The Executive President has declared a State of Emergency, whereas there are bigger emergencies in the country which he has not acknowledged and accepted and the country is falling apart because of such emergencies, says Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa. He made this statement while speaking in Parliament a short while ago today (27). "The President and Government is oblivious to the actual emergency in the country. Many people have lost their jobs and are facing unemployment. The youth of this nation are not employed and resorting to other avenues to generate an income. Children are facing malnutrition and growth stunts will follow. Children are unable to return back to school. This is the emergency, this is what should be called an Emergency. Whereas this is all bypassed and ignored," he said. While speaking, Premadasa mentioned that whoever advised the President to initiate the attacks on the peaceful protestors last week was indeed an "Idiot". "I don't know which Idiot would advise the President to make orders and attack the peaceful protestors. Whoever advised as such are complete idiots and fools. The SJB will not let the government made such rash decisions while we remain as the main opposition. The protesters had committed to leave the premises the following day, but why did the President decide to atack the protest site. I cant beleive a man such as Ranil Wickremesinghe, with much experience in life, make such stupid decisions," he noted. He further added that for democracy to be maintained, it must be practiced and if the government cannot respect democracy, I don't think the SJB can sit alongside the government in decision-making as we do not share the same mentality and are on the same wave-length.
