State officials violating election laws: EC says disciplinary action will be pushed

By Skandha Gunasekara The Election Commission (EC) will push for disciplinary inquiries against state officials who have violated election laws. Director General of Elections Saman Sri Rathnayake told The Morning that the relevant department heads would be informed. “When we receive a complaint against a state official, the process is to inform the relevant department head and have a disciplinary inquiry conducted.” He said the Commission would take action after the election has concluded. “We will wait till the election has been conducted. This also allows us time to receive all complaints.” Rathnayake added that the inquiry could be followed up with legal action. “If the inquiry finds a state employee guilty of the charge, then legal action be taken according to the Penal Code.”
