Station masters’ protest actions called off

  BY Buddhika Samaraweera Following a crucial meeting between the authorities and the Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters’ Union (SLRSMU) yesterday (28), the SLRSMU decided to call off the five-day-long series of trade union actions over 25 demands including revising the methodology for calculating overtime (OT) pay, the granting of timely promotions and updating the train running schedules. Speaking to The Morning yesterday, SLRSMU General Secretary Kasun Chamara said that they met Vehicle Regulation, Bus Transport Services and Train Compartments, and Motor Car Industry State Minister Dilum Amunugama, Transport Ministry Secretary Monti Ranatunga, Railways General Manager Dhammika Jayasundara, and the relevant officials yesterday. He said that since the meeting was concluded positively, the SLRSMU has decided to call off the trade union actions with effect from today (29). “The meeting held with the authorities was successful and we have therefore decided to resume duties pertaining to parcel transportation, the issuance of tickets, and the reservation of rest rooms and resorts belonging to the Railways Department,” he said. The SLRSMU launched this series of trade union actions on 16 December. In protest over Jayasundara’s alleged failure to provide solutions to their issues, the railway station masters were engaged in a number of trade union actions including the withdrawal from duties pertaining to parcel transportation, the issuance of tickets, and the reservation of rest rooms and resorts belonging to the Railways Department. Despite the trade union actions, the trains were in operation as usual and passengers could travel by train without purchasing tickets. However, joining with the Ada Derana Big Focus programme yesterday, Railways Deputy General Manager (Commercial) Vajira Saman Polwattage claimed that the Railways Department lost approximately Rs. 4 million a day due to the non-issuance of tickets by station masters. Station masters had also resigned from duties related to the transportation of oil, flour, and cement, warning that it would in turn cause a shortage of oil, flour, and cement in the market. However, Chamara said that since the authorities responded to their demands positively, the station masters would resume the duties related to the transportation of oil, flour, and cement.
