23 Dec 2021

  • Protest cancellation of several parcel trains sans prior notice
BY Buddhika Samaraweera Islandwide railway station masters have decided to withdraw from all parcel transport services from yesterday (23) in protest over the cancellation of several trains transporting parcels without prior notice, according to the Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters’ Union (SLRSMU). In addition, the station masters have also decided to withdraw from duties pertaining to the issuance of train tickets from today (24). When contacted by The Morning on Wednesday (22), SLRSMU General Secretary Kasun Chamara said that the Railways Department has taken steps to cancel several trains carrying parcels without any prior notice. As a result, he said that more than 4,000 parcels have been collected at railway stations and that consumers have been greatly inconvenienced. “Several parcel transport trains were cancelled at once for no apparent reason. Parcels containing food items have been spoiled now. Incidents like this undermine the trust that consumers have in the Railways Department,” he charged.  He also said that the Railways Department has lost a significant revenue due to the non-commencement of the postal train services which was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Accordingly, he said that station masters islandwide have decided to withdraw from all duties pertaining to parcel transportation since yesterday until the resumption of the parcel transport train service.  Meanwhile, he claimed that more than 100 modern train compartments imported from India have been left unused at several locations. “In protest over this, we have decided to withdraw from duties pertaining to issuing train tickets from today,” he added.  Chamara said that although discussions were held in this regard with Railways General Manager Dhammika Jayasundara on Wednesday, there was no positive response to their demands. Jayasundara was unavailable for comment.
