Stationing PHIs at polling booths

 Still under discussion

Health authorities are exploring the possibility of stationing public health inspectors (PHIs) at polling booths at the upcoming parliamentary election, but a final decision on the matter is still pending.

Ministry of Health Environmental and Occupational Health, and Food Safety Unit Deputy Director General Dr. Lakshman Gamlath told The Morning that matters would be discussed at an upcoming meeting.

“There are recommendations in the draft health guidelines that health officials would be placed at voting centres and counting centres. We will discuss these matters at the upcoming meeting,” he said, referring to a meeting between representatives of the Election Commission (EC) and the Health Ministry this Wednesday (27).

The fate of mock drills to be conducted on the implementation of the health guidelines which were to be held this week is in question, and would also be decided on at the meeting on Wednesday, The Morning learnt.
