STC to sell ebony furniture overseas

BY Buddhika Samaraweera Minister of Agriculture and Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed the State Timber Corporation (STC) to take necessary steps to manufacture furniture by mixing ebony wood and to sell it to foreign countries for the purpose of earning foreign exchange. During a meeting between STC officials where its progress was discussed, STC officials have informed Amaraweera that the STC is currently in possession of about 20 containers of ebony timber. At that time, Amaraweera had instructed them to manufacture wood products by mixing ebony timber and to sell them to foreign countries, thereby focusing on earning foreign exchange. The STC has also informed Amaraweera that it had made a profit of Rs. 1.5 billion last year, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. An official of the Agriculture and Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation Ministry also said that it had been revealed that the amount of financial assets currently held by the STC is at a high level. Meanwhile, noting that there are 34 centres belonging to the STC islandwide, Amaraweera has informed STC officials that the Ministry could provide the necessary agro-technical assistance for the cultivation of food crops by deploying staff on all those lands. The STC, which was established in April 1968, under the State Industrial Corporations Act, No. 49 of 1957, is committed to manufacturing and selling high-quality antique and modern wooden furniture and wooden items, unseasoned and seasoned sawn timber, unpreserved and preserved sawn timber, and to provide seasoning, preservation, and carpentry services.
