Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardena stated in Parliament today (24) that steps have been taken to introduce soybean oil as a substitute for expensive coconut oil and to distribute soybean oil at cheaper prices through the Lanka Sathosa and Co-operative Network in the future.
The Minister was responding to an oral question raised by Parliamentarian Mohamed Muzammil regarding the importation of a consignment of unhealthy coconut oil.
The Minister said that no complaint has been received so far regarding a consignment of coconut oil which is harmful.
"Although no complaint has been received, I have instructed the Chairman of the Consumer Affairs Authority to conduct an inquiry into such coconut oil which is harmful to the human body," he said.
