A Woman Chief Inspector of the Police Special Task Force (STF) was promoted to the rank of Woman Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), making her the first Woman ASP of the STF.
ASP N.T.N. Kumari is among nine officers of the STF who were promoted from the rank of Chief Inspector to ASP.
The promotions were granted considering the special skills displayed by the officers to maintain national security and law and order as well as on exigencies of service.
The officers were promoted by the Public Service Commission based on the recommendations of the Police Department, the STF, and the Defence Ministry.
They were selected out of the 52 Chief Inspectors and two Woman Chief Inspectors serving in the STF.
The other STF officers promoted to the rank of ASP include D.S. Kulasekara, W.A.P. Sampath Kumara, I.S.T. Perera, W.D.S. de Silva, K.G.G.G. Nishantha, E.A.M. Dayaratne, K.D.G.C. Gunaratne, and A.P.E.P Kularatne.
The Sri Lanka Police Department has been seeing a number of women making history as they climb the ranks. Last November, Chief Inspector Kanchana Samarakoon was appointed as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Naalla Police Station in Gampaha, making her the second female OIC in the Department’s history.
Similarly, in October 2021, the Police announced the simultaneous promotion of three female Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) to the rank of Acting Deputy Inspector General (DIG) with immediate effect. The promotions were given to SSP N.D. Seneviratne, SSP A.R. Jayasundara, and SSP W.J. Padmini, following the receipt of the approval from the Public Security Ministry Secretary.
Acting Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police N.D. Seneviratne was appointed to the Information and Technology Division, Acting DIG A.R. Jayasundara was transferred from the Research and Development Division to the Child and Women Bureau, and Acting DIG W.J. Padmini continued to be stationed at the Welfare Division.
The Sri Lanka Police Department appointed Bimshani Jasin Arachchi as its first Woman Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in October 2020.
