By Buddhika Samaraweera   The Department of Meteorology has warned that very strong gusty winds up to 60-70 kmph are likely at times over the western slope of the Central hills, the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, and the Galle and Matara Districts today (12).   In a release issued by the Meteorology Department, it was stated that gusty winds up to 50 kmph at times are likely in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Western, and Southern Provinces, and in the Trincomalee District.   When contacted by The Morning, Duty Meteorologist Udeni Weerasinghe said that the wind speed has by now reduced significantly compared to 9 and 10 July. She added that despite the recent increase in wind conditions due to the active southwest monsoon, it is now returning to normal.   The department also stated that showers or thundershowers would occur at times in the Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces. “Fairly Heavy showers of about 50 mm could be expected at some places in these areas. Several spells of showers would occur in the Western and North-western Provinces and in the Galle and Matara Districts,” the release issued by the department further read.   According to the department, several spells of showers or thundershowers would occur in the sea areas extending from Colombo to Hambantota via Galle.   The department further stated that winds would be south-westerly in the sea areas around the island and that the wind speed would be 30-40 kmph. The wind speed can be increased up to 60 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota, while the wind speed can be increased up to 50 kmph at times in the other sea areas around the island, it added.   Adding that the sea areas extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Galle, and Hambantota and the sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Mannar via Kankesanturai could be rough at times, the department requested the naval and fishing communities to be vigilant in that regard. The other sea areas around the island could also be fairly rough at times.   Also, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) yesterday requested the public to be on alert of the water level of Kalu Ganga in Ratnapura area and announced that the water level of the Kuda Ganga of Kalu Ganga  in Millakanda area had amounted to a minor flood situation. In addition, the DMC requested the public to be on alert of the water level of the Gin Ganga in Baddegama area and that of the Nilwala river in Panadugama area.
