Sudarshini wants non-essential activities restricted for a month

26 Apr 2021

State Minister of Primary Healthcare, Epidemics, and Covid Disease Control Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle is of the opinion that stricter restrictions on non-essential activities, for at least a month, need to be implemented now. “Considering the situation in India and the level of public co-operation here, personally as a medical professional, I believe that some sort of restrictions need to be imposed on non-essential activities, for at least a month,” Dr. Fernandopulle told The Morning yesterday (25). She said that necessary work, education, and necessary economic activity must be prioritised, while travel and leisure need to be restricted for the next month. “After a month of restrictions, the situation could be reassessed. Although public co-operation was requested during the week of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year as well, we did not see this being done effectively. That is why restrictions are needed,” she added.  However, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in a statement yesterday had noted that lockdowns and curfews only serve to negatively impact the daily lives of people, along with the economy and as such, “vaccination is the final solution to the coronavirus, for which the Government is ready”. Public Health Inspectors’ Union President M.G.U. Rohana had told The Sunday Morning, as published on Sunday (25), that several sub-clusters of Covid-19 have emerged from several areas in the country, especially from the North Western Province Kurunegala District and several areas in the Western Province, Northern Province, Eastern Province, and Uva Province in the Monaragala District, leading to a potential third wave. Health officials have also noted that the spike in cases in the past few days have seen a high prevalence in the youth of the country. Meanwhile, Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) MP M.A. Sumanthiran had submitted a private member’s bill on Friday (23) to declare a state of public health emergency in the country. The Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) also warned the public on Friday of a potential third wave, and to restrict movement.
