Sunny Side Up: BR and Maithri on monkeys

07 Aug 2021

Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa and former President Maithripala Sirisena were last week seen engaged in a conversation in the government side lobby in Parliament.  Sirisena was making his way into the Chamber when Rajapaksa, seeing the former President, said: “Mr. President, how have you been? Why won’t you come here for a chat?”  Sirisena smiled and made his way towards Rajapaksa.  The two leaders have then started to discuss several issues related to the agriculture sector.  Among the issues discussed was the loss of crops due to animals.  “I didn’t know that animals, especially peacocks, caused so much crop loss until we discussed the matter recently. I know you have tried to address the issues since the time you were the Minister of Agriculture,” Rajapaksa had said.  Sirisena responded saying: “Yes. But peacocks are considered sacred in the Kataragama area. However, my main focus has been on monkeys. The losses they cause are far greater.”  Rajapaksa had also agreed with Sirisena saying that monkeys indeed were a menace.
