Sunny Side up: From tonic to capsules

09 May 2021

The much-touted concoction that was supposed to be a remedy for Covid-19, the “Dhammika tonic”, was last week deemed an unsuitable remedy to treat the virus.  However, after the entire tonic fiasco, other new Covid-19 remedies are being promoted by several local artists.  A tablet and a capsule produced by a group of doctors using Ayurvedic medicines have now come to the limelight after veteran actor Sriyantha Mendis and actress-turned-politician Oshadi Hewamadduma promoted them on social media.  Mendis, attending the event held to launch the tablet, had said that Covid-19 could be cured by consuming three tablets per day for a period of four days.  Meanwhile, Hewamadduma had promoted the capsule that had reportedly been manufactured by a group of doctors affiliated to the Karapitiya Hospital.  She had further noted that the capsule had been tried on 200 persons infected with Covid-19 and that they had been cured after consuming the capsule.  According to her, the capsule has been registered as a food supplement and not a pharmaceutical, due to delays in the registration system.
