Sunny Side Up: Mahindananda’s relief pack

28 Aug 2021

The Government last week announced that the pack of goods worth Rs. 10,000 that was given to families in quarantine would now be given only to low-income families. When the matter was being discussed at the weekly cabinet meeting last week, Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara had questioned whether there was any proper mechanism to monitor whether the relief pack is distributed among those who are actually in need of relief. Hearing Nanayakkara’s query, Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage had agreed with his colleague and said that even he had received the relief pack when he was in self-quarantine after testing positive for Covid-19. Aluthgamage had stated that he had returned the pack. However, hearing this discussion, Minister Wimal Weerawansa, who was also in self-quarantine not so long ago, had laughed and said that he had not received the relief pack when he was in self-quarantine.
