President's Counsel Gamini Marapona is tipped to be appointed as the Chairman of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission, it is learnt.
The recently enacted Port City Economic Commission Act mandates the President to appoint members to the Commission, including its chairperson. Therefore, Marapona, it is learnt, is the likeliest candidate for the position. The appointment however has not yet been confirmed.
Marapona was also the Counsel who appeared on behalf of Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, when he filed an intervenient petition to over 18 petitions that were filed before the Supreme Court challenging the Port City Economic Commission Bill.
