Sunny Side Up: Minister’s probe

14 Aug 2021

State Minister Vidura Wickremanayake has launched a probe into an alleged violation of Covid-19 health guidelines at the Archaeology Department.  The alleged violation had been exposed after a Buddhist monk, who had attended an almsgiving held recently at the Department, had tested positive for Covid-19.  The said almsgiving had reportedly been organised in memory of a deceased family member of an additional secretary of the Ministry.  Several senior officials of the Ministry had also attended the almsgiving, according to news reports.  However, several units at the Department had to be closed and disinfected since the monk who had tested positive for Covid was also working at the Archaeology Department.  Hearing of this incident, the State Minister has initiated an inquiry, since the event was organised in violation of the existing health protocols.
