Former Minister Navin Dissanayake had recently revealed that it was the US that had chosen the common candidate at the 2015 local presidential election.
Dissanayake had made this revelation during an interview with an online platform.
He had explained that it was the US that had informed that the common candidate at the 2015 presidential election had to be an individual put forward by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga since United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe would not be able to defeat then President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Dissanayake had further revealed that once Kumaratunga had proposed then Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena as the common candidate for the presidential election, the US had made arrangements to get Sirisena’s visit to the US to coincide with Wickremesinghe’s visit to the US.
