Sunny Side Up: Pandora probe goes to IRD

The ongoing probe by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) into former Deputy Minister Nirupama Rajapaksa and her husband Thirukumar Nadesan over the controversial Pandora Papers had resulted in the Commission studying documents received from the Inland Revenue Department of Sri Lanka (IRD) and local banks related to the investigation, it is learnt. Official sources told The Morning that depending on what is learnt during the investigation of these documents, a date on when Rajapaksa will be summoned before the Commission will be decided. Nadesan made two statements before the Commission on 7 and 15 October. Nirupama – the niece of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, and Minister of Finance Basil Rajapaksa – and Nadesan had been named in the recent International Consortium of Investigative Journalists’ (ICIJ) Pandora Papers files leak. The documents allege that the couple was involved in the dealings of shell companies (inactive companies used as vehicles for various financial manoeuvres or kept dormant for future use in some other capacity) located in tax havens which obtained lucrative consulting contracts from foreign companies doing business with the Government of Sri Lanka.
