Sunny Side Up: Raghavan’s predicament

23 Apr 2022

Recently appointed State Minister Suren Raghavan is facing the wrath of the members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) following his decision to defect from the party to the Government when the SLFP decided to leave the Government and function independently in Parliament. A unanimous decision had been reached last Tuesday (19) by the SLFP organisers during a meeting with the party leaders to sack Raghavan from the party. The organisers had also proposed that a protest be carried out outside Raghavan’s residence and demand his resignation from his parliamentary seat as he occupied a National List slot of the SLFP. Hearing about the planned protest, Raghavan had immediately called several SLFP leaders and tried to explain his reasons for joining the Government. He had then asked the SLFP leaders to stop the protest and help him. The SLFP leaders after expressing their displeasure at Raghavan’s conduct had said he should resign from the National List slot in the House as it belonged to the SLFP. They had noted that party members were angered by his betrayal while holding the party’s only National List slot. Raghavan had however not responded to the call for his resignation from the SLFP’s National List slot.
