Sunny Side Up: Ranil visits Abhayarama

26 Jun 2021

Former Prime Minister and incumbent United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe last Wednesday (23) surprised many by visiting the Abhayarama Temple in Narahenpita and meeting with Chief Incumbent Ven. Muruththettuwe Ananda Thera, after attending his first parliamentary session after returning to Parliament as a National List MP. The Abhayarama Temple has served as a political headquarters of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa after his electoral defeat in 2015 and prior to the formation of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). Ven. Ananda Thera also played a key role in ensuring SLPP’s victory at the 2019 presidential election and 2020 general election. Wickremesinghe was accompanied by UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena. After visiting the temple, Wickremesinghe engaged in religious observances before receiving blessings from Ven. Ananda Thera. Afterwards, the Thera and Wickremesinghe were engaged in a discussion on the current situation in the country. Wickremesinghe’s decision to visit the Abhayarama Temple after being sworn in as an MP surprised many, as he usually visited either the Gangarama Temple in Colombo 2 or Walukarama Temple in Colombo 3 before and after engaging in any key activity.
