Sunny Side Up: SLPP members exchange blows

24 Oct 2021

The internal clashes within the governing alliance were now out in the open, with members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and those representing coalition partners openly criticising each other and, in some instances, even exchanging blows in public. One such incident was recently reported during the Kothmale divisional development meeting last week. Representatives of the SLPP and National Freedom Front (NFF), led by Minister Wimal Weerawansa, were engaged in a public fracas during the development committee meeting. NFF representative and SLPP MP Nimal Piyatissa was also involved in the fisticuffs. The two sides had started to exchange blows following a heated exchange of words over a development programme in Kothmale. SLPP local government member Chamara Silva had said the development committees cannot make decisions according to the demands of minor parties affiliated to the governing alliance. He had claimed that minor parties like that of Weerawansa’s should leave the governing alliance if it was unable to tow the line. Meanwhile, in another development, local government members at the Attanagalla Pradeshiya Sabha were also involved in fisticuffs. Blows had been exchanged following a heated exchange of words with a representative of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). A female councillor had to be admitted to hospital following a severe blow to an ear.
