Sunny Side Up: Speaker displeased with Government

05 Dec 2021

Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, last week, expressed his disappointment over the absence of a majority of the ruling party’s front-benchers during parliamentary sessions. The Speaker drew the attention of Chief Government Whip Minister Johnston Fernando towards the situation. “Front-bench ministers on either side of your seat are not present at the moment. This is a very disappointing situation,” Abeywardena said, referring to the poor attendance of senior government members. The Speaker went on to note that all MPs were present when the President attended parliamentary sessions, and that he would be compelled to invite the President to attend Parliament more frequently if this trend continued. All parliamentarians need to attend sittings to respond to the issues raised in the House, the Speaker stressed.
