Sunny Side Up: Sri Lanka defends China

[caption id="attachment_145656" align="alignright" width="395"] Uyghurs around the world are protesting to raise concerns[/caption] The Government of Sri Lanka had last week stood by its ally, China, and had defended it on the Xinjiang issue at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) amidst reports of alleged persecution of the minority Uyghur community. “We commend China’s efforts in promoting economic and social development, maintaining social stability and safeguarding human rights, including economic, social, and cultural rights and the right to development, of the people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang,” Sri Lanka had reportedly stated at the UNHRC. However, UNHRC High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet had told the Council on Monday (21): “I continue to discuss with China modalities for a visit, including meaningful access, to the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.” Meanwhile, critics including the UK and the US have alleged that inmates in the camps have been subjected to human rights violations, including arbitrary detention, forced labour, torture, forced sterilisation, and family separation. Beijing has, however, denied the accusations and has described the camps as vocational training facilities to combat religious extremism and boost economic development in the region.
