It is not often that you hear of a politician who says “no” to more power and responsibilities. However, it is now learnt that there is one such minister in the incumbent administration.
It was recently revealed that the President had first requested Minister of Plantations Dr. Ramesh Pathirana to take over the health portfolio. The President had reportedly made the request from Dr. Pathirana after deciding on the need to carry out a cabinet reshuffle.
It is learnt that the President’s request was based on the fact that Pathirana is a doctor and commanded the respect of the members of the health sector.
However, Dr. Pathirana had declined the President’s request.
According to reports, Dr. Pathirana had explained to the President that issuing directives to fellow doctors and medical practitioners would create a professional clash since he too is a medical doctor.
