The recent incidents of outside entities attempting to smuggle narcotics and mobile SIM cards has prompted the Department of Prisons to beef up their perimeter surveillances. Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya, speaking to The Morning, revealed: “Recent incidents of various groups attempting to pass narcotics and mobile SIM cards and accessories have been observed in prison institutions that are located adjacent to shanties. We have now strengthened the surveillance in these prisons at possible vulnerable points.” Upuldeniya noted that such activities are prevalent in prisons located in Welikada, Negombo, and Mahara. The most recent attempt at smuggling narcotics was detected at the Welikada Prison, where a cat was used to deliver heroin to the prison premises. The narcotics had been secured around the cat’s neck and detected by the prison guard. Investigations are now being carried out to determine the origin of the consignment. Likewise, investigations are also underway for the previous incidents, the Commissioner General added.
