  • Queries how MP got a hold of SIS intel reports
BY Buddhika Samaraweera Former State Minister of Education Reforms, Open Universities, and Distance Learning Promotion Susil Premajayantha has requested government leaders to conduct an inquiry into the statement made by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Government Parliamentarian Tissa Kuttiarachchi that the former was removed from the said post on the basis of intelligence reports. Speaking to the media yesterday (6), Premajayantha said that he was always open about what he had to say and queried how a Parliamentarian accessed intelligence reports. “Intelligence units should not come after people like us. We directly say what we have to say. Therefore, I request the leaders of the Government to conduct an inquiry into this statement. It is necessary to find out how an MP got his hands on intelligence reports.”  He also said that the intelligence units should report information on what the public has to say. “They should provide information about the people queuing at every junction in cities and towns to buy things like gas and kerosene. The intelligence units should report information on what those people are saying, especially the farmers who are protesting these days,” he said. Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday (5), Kuttiarachchi said that Premajayantha was removed from his state ministerial portfolio on the basis of intelligence information provided by the State Intelligence Service (SIS) and that the said removal was not based solely on a statement made by Premajayantha at the Delkanda Market. “This country saw only the statement he made at the Delkanda Market. Many people think that he was sacked based on that, but everyone should remember that there is a SIS in this country. The information provided by it can be about the Government, national security, the formation of alternative governments, and the political climate,” he claimed. Premajayantha was removed from his state ministerial portfolio on Tuesday (4), two days after he said that the Government’s agricultural policies were a “failure” at the Delkanda Market, a comment which he, after the removal, said he had made “on behalf of the public”. The removal with immediate effect was announced by the President’s Media Division, which stated that the removal was made by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in accordance with the powers vested in him.
