A person has been arrested for presenting fake cheques and defrauding Rs. 43 million from a personal bank account belonging to a steel wire manufacturing company. The suspect was arrested yesterday (27) and is a resident of Embilipitiya, New Town. Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana stated that the victim is 34 years old. It has been revealed that the suspect had obtained Rs. 13 million by issuing a forged cheque from a private bank in Kiribathgoda on April 12. The Police Media Spokesman further stated that the suspect has been arrested by the Commercial and Financial Crimes Unit of the CID. The arrested suspect is due to be produced before court today (28). On April 12, a group of suspects posing as employees of the steel company had presented fake cheques to the bank and obtained Rs. 43 million. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the suspects had gone in uniform to change the cheques as an employee of the relevant institution. Accordingly, a bank official, a person who worked for the steel company and six other suspects is to be arrested in connection with the fraud. The Police Media Spokesman further stated that this is the first such crime in Sri Lanka where fake cheques have been printed. Another suspect is to be arrested and he is currently being investigated through CCTV footage, the police spokesman added.
