Suspension of members not legal: SJB

29 May 2020

The UNP Working Committee's (WC) decision to suspend UNP members is not legal, members of the Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) said today. The UNP WC had unanimously decided to suspend 99 members who had submitted nominations through the SJB to contest the forthcoming general elections today. Former UNP MP Kabir Hashim speaking at a press briefing today said the UNP WC had approved the formation of the SJB and therefore it cannot take action against its members. He said the appointment of Sajith Premadasa as the SJB Leader and Prime Ministerial candidate was also approved by the UNP WC. Former MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara said the UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had even published a paper notice with regard to the formation of SJB and the appointment of  Premadasa as its Leader. "We also have a letter signed by UNP Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe approving same," Bandara said. Bandara said the decision was taken by the faction that has close ties with the government and intends to cripple the SJB.
