Tea plantation industry moves to enhance cultivation

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa According to State Minister of Company Estate Reforms, Tea Estate Crops, Tea Factory Modernisation, and Tea Export Diversification Kanaka Herath, special attention has been given to the planting of new tea plants and the replanting of tea plants and the enhancement of tea cultivation by the Government. The necessary allocations have also been made accordingly, he noted. He said the Government would be allocating Rs. 300,000 per hectare for new plants and Rs. 350,000 would be allocated per hectare for replanting. This would be applicable for both tea smallholders as well as the regional plantation companies, the State Minister said, adding that 73% of the tea that is produced is accounted for the tea smallholders and only 27% is contributed by the regional plantation companies.
