Teacher-principal salary anomaly: financial strength lacking

27 Jul 2021

Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Ramesh Pathirana says that although the need to eliminate teacher-principal salary anomalies has been identified, there is not enough financial strength to make the necessary changes based on the current financial situation in the country. Addressing a media briefing on the Cabinet decisions, the Minister said that it was decided at the Cabinet meeting held yesterday (26) to appoint a sub-committee headed by the Prime Minister to eliminate the salary anomalies of teachers and principals. "At present, the government is not able to make immediate changes to the current financial situation in the country. In this regard, the Cabinet has decided to submit proposals to the forthcoming budget regarding the teacher-principal salary revision. It is reported that the Cabinet meeting chaired by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was held yesterday (26) afternoon and the relevant proposal was made by the Minister of Education. However, during a media briefing held at the Government Information Department this morning (27), journalists inquired about this and Pathirana further stated that the government has agreed to the policy decision to make the teacher-principal service, education and administrative services a closed service, which is to be published in the near future. It was also suggested that solutions should be considered as a whole as there is a possibility of recurrence of disparities. Further discussions in this regard will be held with the unions today.
