Teachers’ decision today after 3-hour talk with PM

12 Oct 2021

  • PM agrees to give Cabinet Sub-Committee salary hike in two phases
  • Union leaders neither agree nor object
BY Buddhika Samaraweera Following a nearly three-hour discussion with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa regarding the teacher-principal salary anomaly issue yesterday (12), the teachers’ and principals’ trade unions are to make an announcement today (13) as to whether they will continue with the ongoing series of trade union actions or abandon such.  A number of teachers’ and principals’ trade union representatives including Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin and Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union (CTSU) General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe met Premier Rajapaksa at the Temple Trees with several ministers, and officials from the Finance and Education Ministries were also present.  “After discussions with the Prime Minister for nearly three hours, the Government has agreed to grant the salary increase recommended by the Cabinet Sub-Committee which was recently appointed to look into the teacher-principal salary anomaly issue, in two stages in two phases. Accordingly, the Government will provide the first instalment in January 2022 and the second in January 2023,” Jayasinghe told the media after the discussion. However, according to him, the trade union representatives had continued to stress that the salary increase should be given at once. Therefore, they had neither agreed to nor objected to the solution being prepared by the Government as of last evening. Adding that the Teachers’ and Principals’ Trade Union Alliance (TPTUA) will hold lengthy discussions on this matter, Jayasinghe said that following such discussions, their position on the ongoing trade union actions will be announced today. Meanwhile, Stalin also addressed the media after the discussion and noted that the clear position of the teachers’ and principals’ trade unions was that the salary increase recommended by the Cabinet Sub-Committee should be granted at once. However, he said that after further discussions, their final decision regarding whether to accept the solution provided by the Government or not will be announced today. Nearly 30 teachers’ and principals’ trade unions have embarked on a number of trade union actions, including withdrawal from all physical and online teaching activities and examination-related duties, demanding a solution to the teacher-principal salary anomaly issue since 12 July 2021.
