Teejay Lanka bullish on PPE-led resurgence

[caption id="attachment_82417" align="alignleft" width="300"] Teejay Lanka Head Office[/caption] By Uwin Lugoda Amidst Covid-19, Teejay Lanka PLC is set to enter the personal protective equipment (PPE) industry by developing new sophisticated fabric products, having seen the potential in the industry. They have anticipated that the PPE industry has tremendous potential to draw new customers based on the existing capabilities of the company, and the company has some new developments in the pipeline which are currently pending approval from regulatory bodies. According to a statement released by the company, following the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, Teejay Lanka PLC commenced operations to develop fabric, alongside the Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (SLINTEC) and local academia, for the PPE industry, for products like masks and overalls. "With the existing situation, the company commenced a strategy to capture the growing demand for PPE and embarked into the exportation of commercial orders of PPE such as masks during this period," said Teejay Lanka PLC Director Hasitha Premaratne in the statement. According to Premaratne, with its existing product range – the one currently in development – and the strength of the balance sheet, with positive cash balances including the company’s capability to leverage further, they will be able to weather the impact posed by Covid-19. Initially, following the decision taken by the Sri Lankan Government, to deal with the pandemic, the company closed down its plants in Sri Lanka on 17 March and had no production for three weeks. After this, the company identified that fabric was available in their inventory, which was suitable to produce masks. Hence, they donated material for the production of two million masks for the armed forces as well as the medical fraternity, with the involvement of the Joint Apparel Association Forum Sri Lanka (JAAFSL) Teejay Lanka PLC is known for manufacturing weft knit fabric which is used mainly for men’s and women’s undergarments, loungewear, and yoga pants, catering to markets like the US and the EU.
