Temporary ban sought on Muslim religious groups

24 Apr 2019

The Intellectual Community of Muslims yesterday called on the Government to suspend all Muslim related groups that have been formed in the last decade until proper clearance is given.

Intellectual Community of Muslims (ICM) yesterday held a media conference at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute.

Its panel consisted of the Dr Roshan Hassim, Rizly Musthafa, Syed Basheer, Mohammed Azmi, and Mohammed Fawaz.

Spokesman for the Intellectual Community of Muslims, Dr Roshan Hassim, told The Sunday Morning that they demand that a screening process be carried out on all Muslim religious groups formed in the last decade.

“The Government, with the help of the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU), should carry out a screening process. Until then all Muslim organizations formed in the last 10 years should be suspended,” he said.

He said that the ICM also called on the Government to and Muslim politicians to show the same interest and initiative as during the Digana riots.

“We want to see the Muslim politicians take the same initiative and show the same interest as they did when the Digana riots occurred. We don’t see that happening this time,”

In addition, the ICM said that the Government must remove any politician with even the slightest involvement in the terror attack.

“The Government should first remove from their portfolios any politician involved and then question them”

The ICM also called on all Muslim leaders to come out and make public statements on the incident.

“The muslim people are ashamed about what happened. We feel guilty for our inaction. SO we call on all Muslim leaders, especially religious leaders, to come and make a statement to the people of this country and condemn the attack,” he said adding that Islam in no way preaches that killing was needed to go to heaven.
